Many organisations are feeling the effects of the credit crunch. In these times there may be a tendency for organisations to try and cut back on Health & Safety spend or put on hold H&S improvement programmes.
There are many compelling reasons why organisations should look at using software to manage compliance.
Every Safeguard implementation is designed to provide a measurable improvement with a rapid payback. Typical areas in which Rivo’s clients have measured value and return on investment include:
- Reporting – reducing the amount of time taken to produce management reports from existing paper and Excel systems. Through using Safeguard, Rivo’s clients have eliminated this associated expense immediately and now instantly get accurate, real-time information.
- Duplication of effort - very often the same sets of activities (for example risk assessments) are carried out across all locations. Through Safeguard, these can be completed centrally and instantly rolled out to other locations.
- Sharing best practice - by immediately identifying why claims are being pursued and why accidents are occurring, corrective measures can be immediately put in place to prevent lost time injuries.
- Reducing fraudulent claims - Rivo’s clients have identified that once it becomes common knowledge that claims are captured and monitored through Safeguard, there is generally a rapid reduction in the number of claims submitted.
- Culture change – Safeguard has helped Rivo’s clients drive culture change in systematic, common and measurable ways.

As with any part of a business Health and Safety must be implemented in the most efficient and cost effective manner. Many Health & Safety Professionals already understand the business benefits associated with using dedicated Safety, Health and Environmental compliance software but may have difficulty in building a business case to justify the expenditure involved, particularly in these current economic conditions. We have extensive experience in helping organisations build business case justifications which are specific to their own organisations. For further help on this please email us
Late last year we held a seminar at the IBM Forum, Warwick, focusing on getting the maximum out of the investment in a software system. James Preston-Hood, Health & Safety Director at Grosvenor spoke about justifying new expenditure for Health and Safety and securing current budget allocation in the current climate.
He looked at the need to articulate the scale of risk involved to the whole business, and in particular he looked at some of the negative effects of not employing Health & Safety software which included:
- Reputational risk – damage to brand through bad publicity and damage to share price
- Financial risk - fines/ prosecutions
- Legal costs associated with servicing claims and prosecutions
- More management time checking what has been done and needs to be done
- Duplication of effort of having to do things again as no audit trail so no record of having done things the first time around
- Difficulties in identifying underlying causes of accidents and incidents
The centralised collection and management of Safety, Health and Environmental information can significantly reduce the time taken to produce management reports and to make information available across an organisation. These types of efficiencies are quite tangible and should form a central part of any business case for the introduction of a software system.
