A rare insight into a google data centre
Until recently, Google data centers were a closely guarded secret. The company’s technical innovations were regarded as a competitive advantage.
But on April 1, in the spirit of a promise made in 2006 to be more transparent, Google revealed details about its custom servers and its data centers. During the Google Data Center Efficiency Summit in California, Google showed a video tour that allowed a rare peak inside its data center operations. The same video is now available on YouTube. It showcases the companys’ use of shipping containers to store servers and storage. Each of these 40-foot data center containers can house up to 1,160 servers, and Google has been using them since it began building its own facilities in 2005.
